In 1897, 8 teams of the Victorian Football Association create the VFL (Victorian Football League). This clubs where Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne (the oldest club), South Melbourne, i St Kilda.
In 1925, the league grows up to 12 teams, still all of them from Victoria. And in 1982 started the expansion to sides from outside Victoria.
Currently 18 teams dispute this competition. The top 8 classifieds play a final phase that ends with the Grand Final. The AFL Grand Final, which is held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground each year.
